Traditional Lika house
The construction of wooden houses in Plitvica Selo, under the joint name “Ethno Houses Plitvica Selo”, began in the autumn of 2011. The word “ethno” in its name is neither fashionable nor accidental; it is fully deserved and based on serious preparations and respect for the traditional elements of construction in this area.
Namely, using the conservators’ guidelines when preparing the design documentation and by using simple, natural materials – wood and stone – combined with a giant effort on the part of our employees, traditional construction of houses was merged with the ultimate comfort of living and using the space.
The wooden load-bearing structure is made of beams and columns – more than 600 pieces per house – assembled exclusively using woodworking joints to form a solid and compact unit of a Lika house. Traditional construction is, along with the wooden load-bearing structure, characterised by steep roofs covered with a wooden cover (Croatian: šimla), wooden façades, the traditional architectural element ganak (vaulted entrance), and a free layout on the terrain, using the natural shape of the space to accommodate buildings and other objects.
During construction, special attention was paid to outdoor design and environmental protection, since Plitvica Selo is situated in the heart of Croatia’s oldest, most beautiful national park, the Plitvice Lakes. Therefore, only natural materials were used in the construction of wooden paths, with little bridges and benches, as well as dimmed lighting, creating a special atmosphere of old times.
The interior is equipped with custom handmade rustic furniture, modelled after prototypes that can nowadays be seen at the Museum of Lika in Gospić. The choice of linens and curtains also speaks volumes about the commitment and care for the autochthonous and traditional, creating a local feeling and atmosphere.
Plitvice Lakes National Park is one of Croatia’s oldest, largest and most famous national parks, which was added to the UNESCO World Heritage register in 1979. This specific complex, comprising 16 lakes arranged in cascades on the Korana River, interconnected with cascades and waterfalls, represents a unique hydrogeological phenomenon in the world. A fundamental feature of the park are travertine barriers, thousands of years old, deposited by the action of travertine-forming algae, moss and plants. As an addition to karstic rock and combined with water, they form a whole that represents one of the most impressive places in the world. More detailed research on the flora of lower plants (Pevaleka, 1924 and 1935) proved that aquatic algae and moss formatively participate in the creation of travertine, and that travertine and travertine-forming plants are the most important factor that influences the morphology of the Plitvice Lakes. Systematic research on the flora of higher plants (Šegulja and Krga, 1984) confirmed that the Park was also a phenomenon of sorts in terms of richness and variety of the flora of higher plants. On the relatively small area of the Park, 1267 plant species from 112 families have been recorded. When it comes to the animal world of Plitvice Lakes National Park, what springs to mind is its trademark – the bear. However, the richness of this national park’s fauna is significantly greater and more valuable than the “glory” of its most attractive representative. Therefore, we invite you to visit Plitvice Lakes National Park as soon as possible and enjoy the treasures of one of the world’s most famous national parks.
